How the Internet/Social Media helps me academically as a student

My name is Chris Jomerson P. Camero, and as a student, I’ve always found the internet to be an important tool in both my academic and personal life. Whether I’m coming home from school on the weekend, the internet is my go-to space to relax, learn, and grow. More specifically, social media and platforms like YouTube have played a significant role in enhancing my academic experience and improving my skills, especially in language and English communication. It’s amazing how these digital platforms, which many often associate with entertainment, can also give you crucial learning tips. 

One of the most obvious ways the internet helps me academically is through the amount of information I can access. YouTube, for example, is my personal knowledge book. I’ve spent countless hours watching videos that explain complex concepts, review study materials, and even provide step-by-step tutorials on subjects I may struggle with in school. For example, when I was struggling with a particular concept in my Math Subject, so I turned to YouTube. I watched videos where various mathematicians and educators broke down difficult Mathematic rules, formula usage, and even solving tips. Over time, my linguistic skills in English significantly improved, and this directly helped me not only in my studies but also in my ability to communicate confidently and effectively.

Aside from improving my English, I also find YouTube to be a wonderful place to expand my knowledge on a massive range of topics. Whether it’s history, science, mathematics, or technology, I’m never bored, because I have access to informative channels that break down difficult subjects into simple formats. These videos give me a better understanding of my academic subjects and keep me engaged, which makes learning feel less like a chore and more like a personal exploration. In fact, there’s so much content on the internet that I’ve learned things that weren’t even part of my curriculum—something that wouldn’t have been possible without the internet.

Beyond just YouTube, social media has also been a helpful tool for my academic growth. Platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit provide avenues for academic discussions, real-time updates on recent research, and opportunities to connect with peers and professionals in various fields. I’ve found that participating in these online communities and following thought leaders helps me stay informed about current trends and academic breakthroughs. The exchange of ideas and knowledge is incredibly valuable, especially when it comes to gaining different perspectives or clarifying doubts. Social media also gives me the chance to ask questions and receive answers from a wide network of people, including experts and fellow students.

Another way the internet benefits my academics is by providing access to a plethora of free resources that make learning more accessible. Whether it’s free online textbooks, research articles, or video lectures, the internet is full of resources that supplement what I learn in class. Websites like Khan Academy, Coursera, and edX allow me to access courses and materials that help reinforce concepts I learn in school. Sometimes, when I feel that my regular classes are moving too fast or too slow, I turn to these resources to study at my own pace.

Finally, playing Video games, though often seen as purely recreational, has its academic advantages as well. Certain video games require problem-solving, strategic thinking, and critical decision-making—all skills that can benefit my academic life. For example, I enjoy strategy games that require me to think ahead and plan my actions, which helps me develop critical thinking skills that I can apply in my studies. It’s fascinating how gaming and learning can intersect in such a seamless way.

In conclusion, the internet and social media are far more than just entertainment or things that distraction me.
